PUKATJA

Pukatja, SA 0872, is a remote Aboriginal community located in the Anangu Pitjantjatjara Yankunytjatjara (APY) Lands in the far northwest of South Australia, near the Northern Territory border. Formerly known as Ernabella, it was established in 1937 as a Presbyterian mission and is one of the oldest continuously operating Aboriginal communities in Australia. Pukatja is home to the Pitjantjatjara people, who maintain strong connections to their cultural heritage, language, and traditions. The community is known for its vibrant arts scene, particularly Ernabella Arts, Australia's oldest Indigenous art center. With a small population, Pukatja faces challenges typical of remote communities, including limited access to services and infrastructure, but it remains a culturally rich and significant place for the Anangu people.
