OOMBULGURRI

Oombulgurri, located in the Kimberley region of Western Australia (postcode 6740), was a small Indigenous community situated on the banks of the Forrest River. Established in the 1970s, it was home to the Gija, Miriwoong, and Wolmajarri peoples. The community faced significant challenges, including economic hardship, social issues, and limited access to services. In 2011, due to these difficulties and declining population, the Western Australian government made the decision to close Oombulgurri, relocating residents to nearby towns such as Wyndham and Kununurra. Today, the area remains largely uninhabited, with its history serving as a reminder of the complex issues faced by remote Indigenous communities in Australia.
