MURRAY ISLAND

Murray Island, located in the Torres Strait off the northern coast of Queensland (postcode 4875), is a culturally significant and remote island community. Known as "Mer" in the local Meriam Mir language, it is part of the Murray Island Group and is the traditional homeland of the Meriam people. The island gained historical prominence due to the landmark 1992 Mabo decision, where Eddie Koiki Mabo, a Meriam man, successfully challenged the concept of *terra nullius* and secured recognition of Native Title in Australia. With a small population, Murray Island is characterized by its lush landscapes, coral reefs, and strong Indigenous cultural heritage. Access is primarily by boat or small plane, and the community maintains a deep connection to their land, sea, and traditions.
